How To Clean Cushion Covers Without Damaging Them

When it comes to cleaning cushion covers there are essentially two techniques, depending on whether your covers are removable or not.

Cleaning Removable Covers.

If your covers are made of leather, then it is best not to try to clean these yourself, but to remove them and send them to a specialist dry cleaner.

Vinyl covers can normally be cleaned without removing them. In this case simply put a capful of washing-up liquid into about half a pint of warm water, dip a clean cloth in the water, ring it out, and wipe over the cushion. You can then dry the cushion with a second clean dry cloth.

For most fabric covers, start by using a vacuum cleaner to remove loose dirt and hair, before treating any heavily soiled areas with a specialist pre-wash treatment spray, or a mild detergent. Next, turn the cover inside out and wash it according to the instructions on the manufacturer’s label. If there is no label then wash the cover on a cool and gentle wash cycle. Finally, air dry the cover, as putting in into a tumble dryer may well cause it to shrink.

Cleaning Non-Removable Covers.

The easiest, and best, way to clean fabric covers that cannot be removed is to use a steam upholstery cleaner.

If you do not have access to a steam cleaner, then take the cushion into the garden and place it either on a table, or on a clean sheet on the ground, and beat it thoroughly on both sides, with a carpet beater or broom, to remove loose dirt and dust.

Put a small quantity of washing-up liquid into some cool water and dip a clean sponge into it, before wringing out most of the water. Use long strokes from one side of the cushion to the other and sponge off the cushion, working against the nap of the fabric. Repeat this process, this time working with the nap of the fabric.

Wash out the sponge thoroughly, to remove all of the detergent, and then once more repeat the washing process a couple of times with just a clean damp sponge.

Finally, leave the cushion to air dry. If you need to speed the drying process up then you can also use a normal air circulating fan.
